Glary Utilities

Glary Utilities is an indispensable friend for your PC, with its 100% safe, thorough & quick cleaning and worry-free restoration. Glary Utilities is a freeware with registry and disk cleaning, privacy protection, performance accelerator and amazing multifunctional tools. It can fix dogged registry errors, wipe off clutters, optimize internet speed, safeguard confidential files and maintain maximum performance. It is designed for both novice and professionals. User-friendly interface shows clear & detailed directions.
Glarysoft's Glary Utilities is one of the most consistently popular and most frequently recommended system utilities, and why not? It bundles some of the most useful Windows-related tools in one free download. It scans and cleans your PC, cleaning temporary files, removing junk files, fixing broken shortcuts, and resolving a wide range of issues, both major and minor, that most Windows users will have no trouble recognizing. You can configure its One-Click Maintenance option to run just those processes you want with a single click, making regular maintenance just too easy for excuses. You can run any of its many tools individually, too.
Glary Utilities has a basic but colorful (and skinnable) dialog-sized interface with tabs for Status, 1-Click Maintenance, and Modules. Under Modules, Glary groups a wide variety of tools under a series of headings, some of which access the same tools from different categories: Clean & Repair, Optimize & Improve, Privacy & Security; Files & Folders; and System Tools. We clicked Scan on the 1-Click Maintenance tab, which initiated a system-wide scan for junk files, spyware, and lots of other stuff that we needed to fix or throw out: sort of like cleaning the basement, actually. Glary Utilities displayed its summary findings, and we could click to view details or just press Repair Problems to fix the lot, which we did. The tool swiftly purged our system of the obsolete, unneeded, and junk data that can clog your machine over time, compromising performance and even security.
The 1-Click Maintenance is reason enough to keep Glary Utilities and run it regularly, but more excellent reasons can be found in its Modules, which let you run Glary's utilities individually as well as access many more tools, including a file shredder, startup manager, memory optimizer, registry defragmenter, and file recover and undelete tool. It also lets you run a variety of Windows utilities from Glary's interface, including the Process Manager and System Information. Running tools like the Duplicate File Finder now and again and the 1-Click Maintenance regularly will help keep your PC running fast, smooth, and safe. We recommend Glary Utilities to all Windows users.

Windows Doctor 2013

Still frustrated by slow computer and PC errors? Worried about your computer security and privacy? Tired of switching among dozens of tools to maintain your computer? Windows Doctor can set you free from all those problems. Windows Doctor is a comprehensive PC care utility that can help you easily protect, maintain and optimize your computer. It provides an all-in-one solution for your PC's daily maintenance and protection.
It combines 14 essential and practical tools for Windows so that with a few mouse clicks, you can fix registry errors, clean privacies, prevent security threats, clean Windows temp files, manage startups, recover lost data, split/shred files, repair Windows, speed up system and more.

Most people know that computers require regular maintenance, even if they're not quite sure what that should consist of. Windows Doctor provides a suite of utilities that can keep your machine running at its best by addressing a wide range of performance and security issues. If you're in the market for something that will take care of problems without asking too much of you in the way of decision-making, Windows Doctor is a good choice.
The program's interface is sleek and intuitive, with its features arranged in tabs labeled System Booster, System Security, Registry Cleaner, Privacy Cleaner, and Advanced tools. Users can select the particular issues that they want the program to address with a series of check boxes in each tab; the System Booster tab, for example, includes a Hardware Optimizer, System Optimizer, Application Optimizer, and so on. This isn't a program for people who ask a lot of questions; there's no Help file, and if you want to know what it actually means to optimize your system, you're not going to get any answers. Windows Doctor selects all of the options by default, and we went with its recommendation and then had it perform its scan. It returned a list of things that it thought needed to be optimized, and we let it do its work. The result was noticeably faster performance and no obvious issues. In the System Security and Registry Cleaner tabs are where the program's trial limitations become obvious; it will only fix five security issues and 10 registry errors. The trial version is also incapable of clearing browser histories, though that's easy enough to do manually. Advanced tools include data recovery, a disk cleaner, and a disk analyzer. Overall, Windows Doctor offers an impressive suite of utilities, and we think it's worth trying out. Many users will likely find it worth an upgrade to the full version.

Advanced System Care 6 2013

Slow down, freeze, crash and security threats are over. Advanced SystemCare Free is a comprehensive PC care utility that takes an one-click approach to help protect, repair and optimize your computer. Scanning and finding what other utilities miss, it can keep your PC error-free and smooth than ever. This fantastic program is available free of charge. Why Advanced SystemCare Free? New PC Performance - Do you remember the feeling of a brand new PC when you first bought it? Why not try Advanced SystemCare Free, a free PC tune-up utility that focuses on the performance of your PC. Computer Crashes without Reason - Have you ever encountered your PC crashes and you even did not know why. After months or years of using your PC, there might be plenty of changes, which added burdens to your PC but never get cleaned. What Advanced SystemCare Free does is to clean the stuffs that are left over and clean craps to make your PC neat and clean. Registry Repairing and Cleaning - As an elementary part to a PC, if it does not working well, then your computer will be in big trouble. What does Advanced SystemCare Free do? It cleans the records which is unnecessary to your PC but makes the PC running slow and produces troubles. It also repair parts that are missing and make the PC complete.

All it takes it a single visit to a compromised Web site to snare a nasty piece of malware or to pick up cookies that track your every browsing move. And there's nothing worse than a computer that is bogged down so much that it impedes your ability to work or play games. Advanced Systemcare aims to remedy whatever ails your computer by not only cleaning up junk files, malware, and invalid registry entries, but by giving your computer a boost to optimize your PC experience.
Advanced Systemcare's interface is broken down into four maintenance categories so as to not overwhelm you: Quick Care, Deep Care, Toolbox, and Turbo Boost. We started with Quick Care and with the Quick Malware Removal feature. We clicked Scan and the program quickly went to work and came back with no issues. (In all fairness, we regularly run full PC scans using our own security software, so we didn't expect the program to find anything here.) Next up to bat was the Registry Fix, which came back with a whopping 597 problems. We found this a little fishy since we had just tested a very reputable registry cleaner that had found and fixed all of our registry issues. Still, we went through the process of checking and unchecking which files we wanted the program to fix. Once we clicked the Repair Now option, the program went to work and the problem registry entries were remedied in a matter of seconds. The Deep Care feature takes it all a step further by offering deeper scans, as well as a Registry Defrag option, which we successfully used to tidy up our registry. We were a little miffed that the program didn't ask us if we wanted to back up our registry before making any changes. However, we'll give it a slight pass because the program does include a Rescue feature that lets you undo any registry changes, and offers the ability to create a restore point, which we recommend you do before you touch your registry. Our final stop on the tour was the Turbo Boost feature. From there, we selected Work Mode, which let us manually disable unnecessary services and background applications. We were skeptical of it actually doing anything to speed up our computer, but we have to admit that we did notice a slight difference in our computer's speed, and for the better. The program does include an online help guide, though we don't think you'll need it for handling basic cleaning tasks.
Pay close attention while installing Advanced Systemcare because it'll install an IObit toolbar if you don't decline. The program also leaves a folder behind after uninstallation. Still, we recommend it as a worthwhile program for keeping your system running on all cylinders.

Diskeeper

Get Faster PC Speed and Performance with Diskeeper Home edition. Once installed, Diskeeper goes to work invisibly cleaning up the fragmented files that are slowing down your PC using auto defrag, so you immediately see an increase in PC speed. Then Diskeeper automatically prevents future performance-crippling fragmentation before it happens, so that everything runs faster. As new files are written to the disk, they are saved in an orderly fashion, all lined up side-by-side, so they are NOT scattered across your hard drive in hundreds of small fragmented pieces. When your files are fragmented, it takes longer to read them thus slowing down almost EVERY aspect of your computer use.
With Diskeeper installed, your files are neatly stored end-to-end without fragmentation (the scattering of file fragments randomly across the hard drive), so your PC simply runs faster - without any effort on your part. It couldn't be easier to keep your PC running like new. Diskeeper automatically boosts your PC's speed, so you experience faster application, faster web browsing, faster boot-up, faster anti-virus scan and so much more. Diskeeper also extends the battery life of your laptop, extends the longevity of your hard drive and reduces your energy consumption without any effort on your part. This is a simple, automatic fix to a slow PC. With Diskeeper Home, you get: More PC Speed - by speeding up boot-up, application launches, email and internet browsing. Less PC Slows - by eliminating fragmentation-related performance issues that cause PC slows. Extended Hard Drive Life - by reducing unnecessary I/O activity that can cause hard drive failures. Hassle-free PC - by using a "Set It and Forget It" approach to maintain PC performance. You will quickly see how little effort it takes to speed up your PC and increase your application performance with Diskeeper. This is one software solution, you can't do without.

ARO

ARO scans your PC for unnecessary registry and junk files, and runs a baseline security scan to ensure your antivirus, antispyware, and firewall are configured properly. ARO 2013 also verifies that updates for key PC components, such as your Windows operating system, Adobe, Java and other commonly used applications are turned on.
ARO cleans junk and clutter from your PC and Internet browser, freeing up valuable disk space. Also removes remnants of malware files left behind in the registry. ARO repairs registry entries and removes corrupted registry files.
Aro 2013 promises to speed up your PC by performing an all-around cleanup. It will scour through your machine looking for junk files, broken or missing Registry keys, and security vulnerabilities. The look and feel of the original Aro is there, but be warned that this is a different beast than its predecessor.
To start off with some good changes, installing and removal is a breeze, a huge improvement over the 2012 version that we very much appreciated. The bad news is, Aro 2013 now limits its free trial to fixing only the first 50 errors (previously 100). This is important because Aro 2013 does not joke around when it say it will find every junk file. The scan will take you through everything from browser temp folders (IE, FF, and Chrome), the Recycle Bin, to old error logs, shortcuts, cached files, and temp system icons. The findings it returns may be a bit shocking. On a clean image of our test machine running Windows 7, Aro reported more than 1,500 junk files (leftover installation files). On a regular-use PC, it reported a whopping 4,000 files.
We appreciate the thoroughness here, but felt it was unnecessary for everything to be marked as an error. It would be nice to have a clear distinction on what files are critical and should be removed right away or things that are remnants of an old uninstall that could very well be left alone with minimal impact. An option to organize and remove by threat level (or size) would be nice.
The Registry cleaner runs with the same fervent focus on search and destroy. Most of the errors reported were from ACTIVEX and COM entries, that although not detrimental, removing them would have a minimal impact on system performance. Serious problems were caught, however; Aro did find some error with shortcuts of applications that we are still currently using. On the clean image, 277 Registry errors; the regular-use PC report returned 1,092 errors. With so many problems, we wondered how the PC could have booted up in the first place.
The Security scanner is a nice feature, but for some reason Aro did not view our Avast Free AV as adequate protection. Corporate-level McAfee did the trick instead. Update notifier is a good feature if you're looking for complete security. We just didn't feel like updating Flash for the fourth time this month.
That being said, 50 free fixes in the scores of hundreds (if not thousands) of errors amounts to very little. If you're using the trial, forget about the cleaner and use it as a scanner. The registered version is where Aro really shines. After cleaning out all the errors and performing the Registry optimizer (defragmenting), our regular use machine did feel spiffier in bootup time and programs launch. With the restoration feature, you'd also get a little extra security in case anything critical was accidentally removed.
You can set a schedule on when and how often Aro runs without supervision as well as exclude things from the scan (Web browser folders, Recycle Bin, etc.). The one annoyance is that you still can't opt out of autostart with Windows. Aro is a bit of a nag if you have unsolved error upon boot.
Aro 2013 is a good improvement over its predecessor, but it still has some ways to go. As a trial product it can seem to be on the stingy side and most likely will not win over the freeware crowd. But as a paid software, Aro is a good program for those serious about speeding up their machine and perfect for the OCD types who are keen on keeping their PC pristine and optimized.

Active ISO Burner

Active@ ISO Burner 2.5 is a simple-to-use dialog-style software to burn CD/DVD/Blu-ray ISO images compatible with the ISO 9660 standard. Automated burning is also supported.
New Features: Many more CD/DVD/BD devices supported, as well as fewer burning errors. Three independent burning transports are supported (SPTI, ASPI, SPTD) Works under User's account (via SPTI on Vista, and SPTD transports). Extended device, media, and ISO file information is displayed. Burning mode (TAO,SAO,DAO) and number of copies to burn can automatically be specified. Full text log with actions performed, errors and progress information is displayed. Configuration of after-burn actions supported: Verify, Eject, Shut Down PC. Test Mode burning is supported. The freeware application allows you to burn an ISO image files to CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R, CD-RW, DVD-RW, DL DVD+RW, HD DVD, and Blu-ray Disc.

To burn discs with your PC, you need two things. The first is a CD burner, or (better) a DVD burner, or (better still) a Blu-Ray burner. The second is disc-burning software. For the first, you're probably limited by the burner you already own, and your burner's capabilities will determine what kinds of disc you can burn, how much and what kind of data they can hold, and how long it takes to burn them. But for the second requirement, the burning tool, you have a lot more choices, and a lot of them are free. Active Data Recovery's Active ISO Burner is a free disc-burning utility that is simple to use but offers more sophistication than some premium disc-burning packages. It supports a wide range of devices, including Blu-Ray drives, and three independent burning transport protocols (SPTI, ASPI, and SPTD). You can specify the number of copies to burn, burning mode, and even what happens when the job is done. Recent upgrades include an updated burning engine and Windows 8 compatibility.
Active ISO Burner's installer can also update your PC with any burning transport it lacks. With our permission, it installed the SPTD transport protocol on our system. With a dialog-style interface, drop-down menus, and basic but clear data display, Active ISO Burner is extremely easy to use. We browsed to an ISO image we'd saved in the Source field. There was no need to choose a Target: our DVD burner was the only device on the list. We left the default Mode selection, Track-At-Once, and the default Speed, Auto-Select, though each control offers more options. We could also specify the number of copies to burn, from 1 to 100. An Options button accesses a smaller dialog box with Transport & Cache options and other advanced settings. All that remains is a large Burn button, though you'll find a User's Guide in Active ISO Burner's Start Menu folder that explains how to burn discs.
Active ISO Burner made quick work of burning our ISO image, automatically determining the best speed for our drive. We like this simple tool with not-so-simple capabilities.

Alcohol 120

Alcohol 120% can handle the creation of 31 virtual CD and DVD-ROMs, letting users play discs without needing the physical disc. Users can copy CDs and DVDs to CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, and DVD+RW discs. The reading speed of a virtual CD-ROM is 200x. It supports normal CD, DVD, and CD RAW sub channel reading methods. The RAW reading method lets users emulate all CDs. Alcohol 120% supports numerous CD (CD-DA, CD+G, CD-ROM, CD-XA, VideoCD, Photo CD) and DVD (DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio) formats. It also supports all current (ATAPI & SCSI) drives. The latest version adds two more profiles to the data type options and includes support for unusually formatted DVD+RW discs formatted by other software.
Its wizard-based interface is handy for managing CD images and virtual drives. The program handles most disc image formats, including ISO, Nero, CloneCD, and CDRWIN. Profiles let you save copy settings for audio, game, data, discs. Beyond the wizard, the interface is sparse. Still, the functionality of the application, which should satisfy all users, justifies its price

Ashampoo Burning Studio

Multi-disc file backup and restore on CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs; create compressed backup archives with powerful password protection; split archives automatically across multiple CDs, DVDs or Blu-ray discs; restore archive contents to their original locations; integrated Audio CD ripper store your audio tracks as WMA or WAV files; new option for setting the number of copies you want to burn (available for all disc formats); discs can now be verified immediately without being ejected first (if the drive supports this feature); numerous other small improvements that make the program easier to use and more effective; burn files and folders on data CDs/DVDs/Blu-ray discs; burn Audio CDs from WAV, MP3, FLAC, WMA and Ogg Vorbis files; burn MP3-CDs from your MP3 files; burn Video DVD, Video CD (VCD) or Super Video CD (S-VCD); create and burn CD/DVD/Blu-ray disc images; burn speed and other options can all be set automatically.

In addition to being tucked into a very user-friendly package, this full software suite comes without a price tag. Though many of Ashampoo Burning Studio's features are related, it's still absurd to think about doing this much in one program. Just about anything you could want to do with or to a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray is possible.
Ashampoo Burning Studio welcomed us with a nice interface. Burning, ripping and every other feature this program has to offer are well organized in a helpful menu. Simply choose the feature you want and Ashampoo Burning Studio walks you right through the process. If something goes wrong or you make a mistake, the program will automatically notify you and explain some potential fixes. Though experienced users might not like this level of hand-holding, it's awesome for rookies. The software doesn't output to a ton of formats, but it does give you the option of creating .iso files, which is a nice touch. The only downside is that the program repeatedly tries to install a toolbar to your browser and entice you into buying the full version. Though that alone might scare some folks off, it's not enough to ruin the program.
Ashampoo Burning Studio offers too many features to pass up when it comes to burning discs. The program isn't customizable, but people who aren't tech-savvy will appreciate the clean interface and helpful hints. More experienced users might want to avoid the program and find something that isn't so frustratingly simple.

Golden Records Vinyl to CD Converter

Golden Records Vinyl to CD Converter helps you to convert your vinyl LP records, analog audio tapes or cassettes to CD or to WAV or MP3 files using your computer. Just install the software and follow the step-by-step wizard. Convert audio from vinyl LP records and audio cassette tapes into WAVE or MP3 format or burn straight to CD. Simple wizard takes you step-by-step through the vinyl to CD conversion process. It comes with a full set of audio restoration tools to clean up damaged audio. Set "floor noise" to detect silence and automatically split tracks. It includes full feature CD burner to record CDs after the cassette, LP ripper or vinyl to CD wizard runs. Golden Records Vinyl to CD Converter encodes into MP3 or WAVE files with the ability to add MP3 ID tags to converted files. Automatically normalizes recordings when converting your tapes or vinyl to CD.

To convert LP records to MP3s or CDs, you'll need a stereo with a working turntable and phono preamp you can plug into your PC via the Mic or line-in jacks, or a USB turntable with a built-in phono amp. You'll also need software designed to convert analog audio to digital and clean it up by removing ticks, pops, and surface noise. We've tried many such tools, yet we've often gone back to Golden Records Vinyl to CD Converter from NCH Software, which also converts tapes and other analog audio sources.
Before installing and setting up Golden Records, make sure your turntable is working, since you'll need your needle to set the sound floor to compensate for the wow, flutter, and rumble that color analog audio. Following the setup wizard, we set minimal signal processing options. The biggest drawback of LP converters is a tendency to do too much, like starting a new track during soft passages or distorting the signal by overprocessing it, so use the filters with care. We opted to record songs as WAV files, which are easier to edit and sound better than MP3s, though we could also specify direct conversion to MP3s, burning to CDs, and other options. The program offers a lot of flexibility for accommodating the widely varying sound quality of LP records. There's even an option to record 33 rpm disks at 45 rpm and 45s at 78 rpm; not for the "Chipmunks" effect" but for fast duplication with normal playback. The main interface is a simple, efficient list view of converted files, while Recording Sessions are managed by another dialog resembling a media player interface. Wizard and Options icons on the main view's toolbar let us reconfigure the software at will.
We transcribed several LP records ranging from audiophile quality to barely playable with Golden Records, achieving excellent, archival-quality results each time. The auto track splitter worked fine on scratchy old platters, though recording tracks in the highest possible quality and then splitting and converting them manually using a WAV editor proved the best method for better-quality discs. The sound files produced by Golden Records Vinyl to CD Converter sounded great, whatever the source.

UltraISO

https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTp8FeV_t7ksoEKVfFr8ZIwHVFJabPBcAKRjgecdFLZESv-qaxjuA
UltraISO can extract, create, edit, and convert CD/DVD image files. It can directly edit an ISO file, make ISO images from CD/DVD-ROMs, create a new ISO from files and folders on your computer, and make bootable CDs and DVDs. In addition, UltraISO can convert nearly all known CD and DVD image formats to ISO, BIN/CUE, Nero (NRG), Alcohol 120 percentage (MDS/MDF), and CloneCD (CCD/IMG/SUB) formats, as well as burn CD/DVD images directly with built-in burning engine and emulate ISO images with up to 8 virtual CD/DVD drives.
Highly versatile and especially proficient with boot discs, UltraISO Premium creates, edits, and burns disc images in several popular formats: ISO, BIN, Nero, Alcohol, CloneCD, and Xbox. It also converts images among formats. UltraISO supports data and audio/video discs and includes a simple MP3 encoder, but it really excels at creating bootable discs. It even can create a disc with a menu for booting several OSs.
The interface is well organized, though rather plain, and we wish its icons were more readable. Also on the negative side, the program can't mount CD images, which will diminish its value for some. However, if you need support for multiple image formats and want to design bootable discs, UltraISO makes a very good pick.

ESET NOD32 Antivirus

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTZPr0xV_ZocPyOBQ-lcBk_0wre1eOp5nP65O7n1Yzi8-kxYwFf

Installation
ESET's installation could be faster, although it's by no means sluggish. It's slowed down by a preponderance of screens, including registration, and an unnecessary query as to whether or not the user wants Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) protection activated or not. While a legitimate query, there's no reason for it to slow down the install by yet another screen to click through.
PUPs are definitely a security issue, though, so perhaps the program ought to just scan for them on the first scan automatically, and then ask you if it's a scan you always want.
One decent thing about the registration process is that it's all done from within the suite--no need to jump to your browser. Also, there's no reboot required after the installation. Still, the one-minute-or-less installs from Norton and Trend Micro should be a goal that all security suites aspire to.
Interface
The layout of ESET 5 remains unchanged from version 4, except for minor details, although neither is quite as easy to use as it ought to be. The interface opens to a window indicating your security status. The default is colored green and labeled Maximum Protection, which changes to red and a warning when core security features, such as Network Protection, have been disabled. The center pane doesn't indicate this very clearly, but the plain text Maximum Protection labels that tell you which parts of your computer and activity are protected are actually links. Click one to drill deeper into your settings, toggle features, and gain more granular control over your security.
The left nav lets you access other features, including Computer Scan, Update, Setup, Tools, and Help. To the interface's credit, each tab's layout is kept similar, and there are helpful mouse-over tooltips that help clarify things like the differences between default scans, but key features, like the Advanced Settings window, are hard to find.
Along with a lack of clarity about how to get around ESET's interface is the confusion created by redundancy. There's nothing gained by making things harder to find, and even savvy users will probably have to take more time than necessary to get up to speed.
Features and support
ESET NOD32 5's core features put the suite at or near the top of its class. Its collection of features, while not revolutionary, are nevertheless extremely well implemented. What it lacks are many of the modern ancillary features that justify the higher price.
On the side of the basics, there are two default scans: a "Smart Scan" and a custom scan. ESET has improved its antivirus and antispyware engines so that they don't detect only threats, but prevent your host files from corruption before the bad guys go after you. There's removable media control, so you can block USB keys or external drives from connecting to your computer, and the new gamer mode automatically initiates silent running whenever a program is running at full screen. This is perfect for movies and presentations, as well as games. You can also activate it from the system tray.
ThreatSense, ESET's cloud-based detection, isn't new--yep, it had it three years ago--but it's been expanded in version 5 to include reputation analysis. All of that comes in the basic NOD32. Upping to Smart Security gets you antispam, parental controls, and a "smart" firewall that learns how your computer uses the Internet very quickly.
ESET's browser guards are browser-agnostic, and don't require an extension. You won't get search results ratings, but ESET successfully blocked us from attempting to reach known dangerous Web sites clicked on in search results.
It's not too much of a stretch to say that ESET owns the Support space. In addition to the hot-line support, forums and knowledge base, no other security suite offers an education module like ESET does. Called "Cybersecurity Training," the module features an interactive city that you can explore to learn about how to protect yourself, your personal data, and your computer when online. It's an in-depth approach that we wish other vendors would take, because at the end of the day, it's going to be your own wits that keep you safest.
It's accessible from the installation CD if you buy the physical boxed copy of the program, and we're not sure just yet about how to launch it from the downloadable version.

PC Tools AntiVirus

PC Tools AntiVirus Free is a full antivirus and antispyware package designed to protect from known viruses, worms, Trojans and other threats while defending against spyware, adware, bots, keyloggers and other malware. Monitors for and blocks known malware in real-time. PC Tools AntiVirus Free uses spider scanning technology to identify and remove threats in minutes. Warns you about unsafe or phishing websites and displays website safety ratings in your search results. Frequent automatic updates and product upgrades ensure that you are always protected against the latest threats.
Free antivirus packages have evolved to the point where many of them protect your PC from threats as well as the premium tools. We looked at PC Tools AntiVirus Free, which offers good, basic protection from online threats,is regularly updated, and even includes some useful extras like phishing alerts, Web site ratings, and adware and malware protection.
PC Tools' installer essentially outlines the differences between the freeware and premium versions of its antivirus solution, such as zero-day threat updates, a firewall, ID theft protection, and anti-spam. One of the setup options allows automatic updates. We recommend keeping this box checked since your antivirus software can't be too current. During the setup process, PC Tools downloaded and installed updated antivirus definitions. The program's colorful interface is similar to other tools, but with its own sleek layout. PC Tools scanned our system and found a number of low-level threats like tracking cookies and adware. We could click to expand a tree view to see exactly what the program was targeting. Satisfied, we clicked Fix Checked, and PC Tools quickly cleared the house. Next we clicked the IntelliGuard tab, which offered nine Guards: Behavior, Browser, Cookie, Download, Email, File, Network, Rootkit, and Site. Each offered an explanation as well as View History and Manage Exclusions controls. The Settings tab also offered nine sections, everything from Global Action List to Scheduled Tasks and Quarantine. A Report Card tab brought up a quick-and-easy summary of our PC's security situation and PC Tools' recent activities. Of course, we could click a prominent Upgrade button any time we felt like trying the premium version.
We've tried many antivirus programs, free and pay, and they all have their advantages and disadvantages. PC Tools' free solution offers a nice blend of good, basic protection and some useful extras. Many of the extras it omits are available as freeware, too, such as third-party firewalls and spamfighters. Now if it's a question of free or no antivirus, the answer is simple: Download a free antivirus solution right now. PC Tools AntiVirus Free should definitely be on your list.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2013

Installation
Installing Kaspersky has been dramatically simplified over the past two years. Following on 2012's fuss-free install, the installer for 2013 will remove conflicting security programs and any detected malware automatically.
You're still on the hook for a reboot, but not when running only the trial. The install procedure was only three screens long, and it took under 2 minutes to complete. You can also register and purchase a license key from the program itself, no need to jump to your browser. Overall, this is one of the best installation processes for a security suite, if by best you mean, "short, fast, and painless."

Interface
Kaspersky's followed up last year's overhauled interface with only minor tweaks this year to accommodate new features. The number of windows you must go through to initiate a scan, or to solve a problem warning, has been reduced.
Based on a mobile app-drawer design, the interface presents your security status at the top and stashes the four major security features of scanning, updating, the new Safe Money, and parental controls, at the bottom. The app drawer layout puts key security status information up front, and keeps your tools organized yet easily accessible below. You can slide the features sideways to see more options, or click the arrow at the bottom to pull up, drawer-style, the full list of options. Settings and Reports live in the upper right corner, and both use terminology repeated throughout the interface. This creates a solid level of consistency, and ought to appeal to basic security consumers and power users alike.
A Cloud Protection button at the top of the interface opens a screen that explains Kaspersky's cloud technology that debuted in the 2012 version. Like its competitors that have already incorporated cloud-based detection, you can opt out of anonymously contributing your data without making yourself less safe.
Kaspersky's opt-out is a bit tricky to get to, though. Hit Settings, the annoyingly unlabeled Advanced Settings tab (hint: it's the cardboard box), Feedback, and then uncheck the box to opt out.
Unlike some competitors, which allow you to reorder the tool buttons so you can have the ones you use most often at the ready, Kaspersky's tool layout is locked down. This is one of the few drawbacks to the design. Another is that in the Settings window, the tabs on the left are unlabeled and their icons are not necessarily as obvious to understand as possible. In order, they are Protection Center, Scan, Update, and Advanced Settings.
Labeling aside, the settings themselves were remarkably easy to navigate and comprehend -- even the advanced ones. Meanwhile, jumping from feature to feature was a zippy experience, and we encountered absolutely no lag when skipping between screens.
Features and support
Kaspersky 2013's newest and best features come in the form of some very forward-thinking security improvements.
The most important of them is the exploit blocking engine called Automatic Exploit Prevention. It's a response to the increase in the number of phishing attacks and includes an antiphishing engine -- similar to the antivirus and anti-malware engines -- that updates daily.
It's hard to overstate how critical stopping exploits can be to stopping large-quantity cash thefts from online banks. Experts have estimated recent successful banking breaches at scoring from $3 million to more than $220 million, and Kaspersky says that the exploit prevention engine stops the vast majority of exploit kits.
A major component of the exploit prevention engine is Address Space Layout Randomization, or ASLR. It's a proven security technology, used in Apple OS X and iOS, in Google's Android, and by Microsoft in Windows 8. It's not foolproof, but it is one of the more effective security technologies currently available. The inclusion of ASLR in Kaspersky means that the technology will be available to Windows 7 and earlier versions, making Kaspersky unique in the security realm for that reason.
The suite now blocks Duqu and other malware specifically designed to surreptitiously install on your computer before the antivirus program loads during boot.
Safe Money revamps the Safe Run feature from previous years and is only in Kaspersky Internet Security 2013, not Kaspersky Anti-Virus. It basically streamlines the process of accessing banking sites securely. Simply go to your banking site, and as long as you have Kaspersky's browser add-ons installed, it will ask you if you want to open the site in a sandboxed mode, isolated from other browser and PC processes. You can also manually add other sites to Safe Money in Kaspersky's interface, but it's no longer a requirement because of Safe Money's new auto-detection. You can tell it's running because of a thin green line around your browser window.
We were skeptical about Safe Money working as advertised, but it really does detect banking Web sites as you visit them and reopen them in sandboxed browsers. It detected both major banks like Chase, and our own local credit union's site without fail.
Other changes have been made, as well. The secure keyboard for protecting personal data when entered by a physical keyboard works with more sites than before; there is expanded browser compatibility so it now works with Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Opera; and better battery management has been implemented for laptops. (We did not test the battery life, however, due to time constraints.)
There are older features worth calling out, too. One is the File Advisor, which is a Windows Explorer context menu option for checking out a file's reputation without having to go through the main Kaspersky program itself. It creates a pipeline from the Kaspersky Security Network, the Kaspersky cloud protection, to the files on your desktop. We found it to pull down reputation data quickly, although its speed also depends on your Internet connection.
The Roll Back feature can easily undo damage caused by any malware that does slip through, and the Network Monitor feature shows you real-time traffic to and from your computer. Among the better ancillary tools are an Internet Explorer security analyzer, which is a good idea if you're stuck on Windows XP with IE8 or earlier -- but it's weird that it doesn't support any other browsers.
The virtual keyboard, different from the physical keyboard protection, has been improved so that it's more responsive than previously. It's mostly an older feature to use if you're worried about keyloggers that Kaspersky keeps around for bragging rights. It's highly unlikely that you'd have Kaspersky running and be infected by a keylogger.
